The wise Solomon, tells us in Proverbs about three cornerstones which must
pe part of the foundation of a child's life:
-
The fear of the Lord (Proverbs 1:7) "The fear of the Lord is the
beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction."
There is no child too young to learn to fear of God. Good child rearing
has at its basis respect for God, and the desire to please Him. Understanding
the holy character of God, will motivate children to live right and avoid
sin, because the fear of the Lord keeps the conscience awake. We want
wise children, who live clean lives and make right choices... let's teach
them the fear of the Lord!
-
Obedience to parents (Proverbs 1:8-9) "My son,
hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy
mother: For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and
chains about thy neck." The image prezented by this verse is that
of a prize winner who is awarded and wears a medal. A moment of
complete joy for the child and for his parents. But in order to
get the prize, much discipline, labor and perseverence are required.
Although all parents desire the happiness of their children, they often
forget that disciplining them is extremely important to keep them on
the right path. The first commandment with a promise regards
exactly obeying and honoring parents. But children are not inclined
to obey, but rather to break the boundaries set by their parents. They
must be helped to practice obeying their parents by a discipline that is
followed through with perseverence. Thus children will be blessed their
entire life with happiness, and the parents will have reached their
goal.
-
Avoiding bad influence (Proverbs 1:10) "My son, if sinners entice
thee, consent thou not." Parents as well as spiritual teachers, play
an important role in the life of children, in guiding them and showing
them the principles of life that conform to the Scriptures. Let's
remember the child Samuel and the role that his parents played,
by the act of dedicating him to the Lord as a little child,
and later by Eli a servant of God, who understood that God was calling
Samuel to fellowship with Him. (1 Samuel 2:11) Dedication of children
is not limited to the dedication ceremony, rather it begins there.
Children must be taught to make right decisions in life, and the biggest
obstacle is peer pressure. Children find it difficult to act in a way
different then their peers. They will choose to behave like their friends.
This is the great challenge for parents to teach their children to walk in
integrity, loving Christ. Against the current, in spite of any
negative influence, and peer pressure children are still capable of
making any effort for Jesus. Most believers are reminded of the fact
that they received Jesus, when they were but children... Let's watch
over the environment in which our children live, and let's avoid bad
company which can destroy the teaching efforts of parents. The most
beneficial environment is that in fellowship with other children in the
house of the Lord, in Sunday School, in church music groups and in an
environment in which at the appropriate time they will hear the Lord's
voice, and will answer: Here am I!
The fear of the Lord maintained by parental instruction and avoidance of
a sinful environment are cornerstones at the basis of character development
in the life of children. Let's work at building on them everyday!
